Playing - in her new overalls

I have been wanting to write a bit about Frida. She’s 16 months now, and still our little one, but then again, she’s not all that little anymore. Her personality develops with every day that passes, and it is a joy to see! She really does light up a room and most of the time she’s just a bundle of joy! She has a will that surpasses several of those in the otherwise strong-willed people in this family, and she can definitely be a handful! Above you see her wearing the Puuheppa overalls – did I mention I love them?!

She walks now as her preferred choice of transport, but she didn’t give up crawling easily – still turns to that, when she finds it useful. Teaching her how to eat on her own is coming along slowly. It took our little handball player a while to stop throwing forks, plates, and cups (and anything else for that matter) through the air, whenever one was within reach. It’s almost under control now, and she does drink and eat on her own – when the food permits and it suits her…

And talking of playing handball – she is pretty good at throwing a ball, and sometimes she nearly even catches it when it’s thrown to her. We have been joking with her throwing everything, but it seems to be working, ’cause she’s rather good, and Ronja loves to play ball with her! Earlier it was sometimes hard to entertain her, but at the moment, she has become quite good at playing by herself for a while, concentrating on a toy or a book.

Getting older for Frida also means closing in on the palate surgery. As I have mentioned before, she has a cleft palate which is going to be closed in surgery when she’s approximately 18 months old. We don’t know the excact date, because they’re unable to give us a specific date earlier than about 3-5 weeks prior to the surgery. So during the coming two months, we need to get her off the night-bottle – she still has a small bottle of warm milk before she goes to sleep. And what’s worse, we have to wean her off the dummy! Good thing she’s so fond of her security blankets – that’s going to help us in the process.

Meanwhile, she still sleeps like a baby during the night – and I know a lot of people to whom that would mean sleepless nights, crying, days of an unimaginable tiredness that only parents understand, etc. Not here though, in this house the term ‘sleeping like a baby’ covers sleep from 6.30 p.m. to 6.30 a.m.

Altogether, she’s just one lovely little girl!

Today was an important day for me. This morning I went to my new workplace in order to sign the contract and spend the day in the company of my new colleagues. I don’t actually start until December 1st, but it was really nice to meet everyone and get a taste of what’s in store for me. This is why I have been so busy for a while – not being able to mention it here. I have been exploring job opportunities, but didn’t want to reveal anything until I had properly quit my old job and signed on with a new company. So I’m going to be working as an Account Manager at Advertising.com - back to working with online marketing, which I’m pretty excited about. I’m going to be part of a new launch in Denmark, and I won’t go into details yet, but I’m looking very much forward to everything!

So what kills me is this:

First tottering step (well, almost)

Frida actually chose TODAY – of all days – to start walking. Can you believe it???? I go away for one lousy day and then she walks??? Mads took Ronja to gymnastics class this afternoon, and while he and Frida were waiting outside the gym, Frida chose to start walking. BOOOHOOOOO…… *sniff*

But hey! She’s walking – and very enthusiastically too! And I’m her biggest fan – though Mads may try to claim that title as well! :) As you can guess, the picture doesn’t show Frida’s first step - this was after I returned home. However, this is Ronja’s first step – 3 years ago almost to the date.

So here is my tiny model for the Cilla leaf dress. And yep, she is standing on her own!

Frida in her new dress

She doesn’t walk unsupported yet, but she can stand quite well. We have been trying to encourage a bit of walking, by making the traditional “from Dad to Mom”-track (and reversed) - however, crawling works so well for her, even if she does walk, it will not be anywhere near as effective for her, at least not for a while. You should see her crawl, she is incredibly fast, and sometimes she has sort of a race track thing going on around the dinner table.

Frida is always happy. Really – always - she’s a little sunbeam. She’s getting so big, which is good, because Ronja wants her little admirer to be able to do stuff – you know, like sing and dance. And dress up. And play grocery store. Oh yes, Frida still enjoys the attention of a very devoted big sister.

Frida in her new dress

We have no doubt, Frida is going to be a handball player – she throws everything all the time, and it’s literally impossible to put a plate in front of her at the dinner table – at least if you expect it to stay there. For that same reason, eating on her own is progressing rather slowly – put a plate in front of her and it’s on the floor in a split second (the same goes for the food if you put it there without plate), put a cup of milk in front of her, and it’ll hit the wall before you can count to… erhhh – before you can count really… ;) She does eat a piece of bread, a bun, or a rice cracker on her own, though – she seems to like that a lot. Frida has 11 teeth now – didn’t she just yesterday get her first two? Nope – that was June 10th. 11 teeth in less than 6 months – no wonder she keeps drooling…

And then she eats books. I remember Ronja at the same age, she used to read books very carefully, turning each page with her fingertips, and just looking through books for hours. With Frida it’s quite a different story – I have had to put a lot of the baby books away, because I want a few of them to survive their first meeting with her.

Frida’s sleep during the night has been pretty much uninterrupted for a year now, which is amazing! She loves going to bed, and she goes to sleep by herself. We just tuck her in and leave the room – and that’s the way it has been all along!

As for the dress, I love it on her – it’s a little bit big, which is fine because that way it’ll last for a while. I love the pattern – the rounded yoke looks beautiful – I may make a blouse of some kind especially for this dress, though. When she crawls, she gets her knees into the dress, but then my version is longer than the pattern suggests, because I cut it with a seam allowance, and then I hemmed it with bias tape instead of the traditional way. All in all I will definitely recommend this pattern.

 1 year

On this day last year, Frida was born. She was 1 month early, and just so tiny and fragile. She was born with a cleft palate which meant that I was unable to breastfeed her, and basically, she gave us a few surprises when she made her entrance.

Today we celebrated her one year birthday, and I’m telling you, many words come to mind when you see her, but tiny and fragile are not among them.

So happy

She’s the happiest little girl, with a contagious smile and a wonderful curiosity, and honestly, she doesn’t give us much trouble. She has been sleeping through the night since she was about 2-3 months old, she eats well, and she rarely complains about anything. When she’s a year and a half, she will have to undergo surgery to have her cleft palate closed, but until then we’re glad that it’s not bothering her.

This afternoon, we have had family visiting, and we have had such a nice day. Happy children, good company, birthday cake, wonderful presents, and beautiful weather! What more can you ask for?

So Frida -

HAPPY 1st BIRTHDAY!!!

This morning we had bright sunshine and blue sky, but now it’s rather windy, and the sky is grey. Yesterday, when the calendar was still on the summer page, I got a shot of Frida wearing her flower girl dress.

Frida in the garden

She was in the garden trying out the baby walker, however pushing it in the mossy grass proved a little too tough. Ronja was blowing soap bubbles as she very often does!

Blowing soap bubbles

I have been sewing again today, but I’ll get back to that later.

I know - I’m not that fast, but we’re here! We got home very late Tuesday night – or perhaps I should say Wednesday morning. We did have a very nice trip to Greece – although it wasn’t one without challenges.

The place was beautiful, and the beach was perfect and great for the children. We met lots of nice people, and had some wonderful food. However, Ronja came down with a high fever after a couple of days, and though it dropped a bit, it lasted for the rest of the vacation. She was amazingly brave and tried so hard to pretend that she was doing fine, when at the same time she wasn’t. It’s not much fun to be sick, when you’re on vacation.

Besides this, we lived in a campsite, and the ground consisted of dirt and spruce needles from the pine trees. As you know, Frida just started crawling, and she’s drooling a lot because of her new teeth. It was very hot, and most of the time she only wore a diaper, which meant that because of the drooling and the crawling, we really mostly saw a tiny mudball, racing around covered in needles. I think she had lots of fun there, and she definitely enjoyed the sea.

We did lots of bathing in the wonderful clear water, and we did relax – as much as the above conditions allowed. You can check out all the pictures from our vacation here. By the way, Ronja is fine now – the fever is completely gone, the light is back in her eyes, and I think it did her good to return to our small yellow house.

And now for something totally fantastic:

I’m an AUNT!

My brother Jakob’s wife Jolanda gave birth to a beautiful baby girl yesterday. We’re going to Amsterdam to visit them next week, and we can’t wait! I think Ronja is pretty excited to see her little cousin Marlinde.

BIIIG congratulations to the new parents!
